Nail is a horn-like envelope covering the dorsal aspect of the terminal phalanges of fingers and toes in humans, most non-human primates, and a few other mammals. Fingernails and toenails are made of a tough protective protein called keratin. This protein is also found in the hooves and horns of different animals. A healthy finger nail has the function of protecting the distal phalanx, the fingertip, and the surrounding soft tissues from injuries.
